#1 Travel writers say that you must go solo to appreciate the object of your travel. I was relieved to find out that Steinbeck was not as strict about solitude as he claimed to be. He regularly traveled with his wife, who was about to retire from her second career as the executive director of a local nonprofit.

#2 I wanted to find out what Washington got right, and what tools he and his generation had left us to begin to build a better nation. I wanted to understand how he attempted to bind us together into a lasting union of states.

#3 The country was gripped by two extraordinary events: a global pandemic that made the freedom of movement we had once taken for granted impossible, and a demand for social justice that inspired protests across the country.

#4 George Washington was elected president of the United States in 1789, but he knew that the position would only bring expectations of private happiness that he could not meet. He felt like a culprit who was going to the place of his execution.
