#1 I was seven and a half when I moved to Washington, DC. My family had changed homes three times within a four-mile radius, and we had moved to a new house every time. I was completely absorbed in playing with my My Little Pony figurines, until I felt a presence next to me.

#2 I knew about guardian angels from TV shows. They are always visions in white gowns with expansive wings who float on beds of cumulus clouds. There was no visual for mine, just a voice that sounded clear and sure, an articulation that permeated the room.

#3 I was taught never to speak about a secret if I heard it. If I did, I should close the door and never speak of it again. If I heard a secret, I should wait to see if my parents ever spoke of it.

#4 I was a tween when I called 911 one Saturday afternoon and told the operator my family was not safe. I was located at home, and the police sent a unit right out to me.
