#1 The activities of the Israeli air force at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in 1973: A flash of white thigh in dark water. Hair plastered down a smooth back. Ripples glimmering around rocks. Bras and fatigues crumpled on the sand.

#2 The monitors at the radar station that sat above the airfield in Egypt were Israeli soldiers. They had never seen an enemy plane, and they were bored. They smoked in sandbag emplacements overlooking the Red Sea.

#3 On Yom Kippur, the service is long and slow, and it meanders through featureless land. But there are several peaks that offer a flash of understanding and a view of something great and old.

#4 The Day of Atonement is a time when the synagogue shuts off all escape routes, and tries to move the congregation from Jonah’s mindset at the beginning of the story to his understanding at the end. It’s an understanding that most of us cannot grasp.
