Summary of Marie Hargreaves's The Convent

#1 My parents, Fred and Kathleen, had five children in five years. They lived in a small rented terrace in Oldham, which was two rooms on each floor. We had no carpet or furniture, and the house stank of sewage. I was terrified of falling into the slimy waters below and drowning in poo.

#2 The poverty in my family’s home was chronic. We had no money for treats, days out, or new clothes. All that belonged in another street and another life.

#3 I loved going shopping with my mother. She would buy me new clothes, and I felt like a princess when I got home. But the trips were only a temporary escape from the heaviness of life at home. The pressure of being poor weighed on my mother.

#4 There were many accidents in our house, and I often felt guilty that I was the eldest child, and in charge of the others, while my mother was always telling me that she could rely on me.
