#1 The role of chance in our lives is not limited to extreme circumstances. The outline of our lives is constantly being influenced by a variety of random events, along with our responses to them, which determines our fate.

#2 The human response to uncertainty is complex, and it is often the case that different parts of the brain come to different conclusions and apparently fight to determine which one will dominate.

#3 The world is filled with randomness, and it is a rare skill to be able to make wise assessments and choices in the face of uncertainty. We will examine the role of chance in the world around us, the ideas that have been developed over the centuries to help us understand that role, and the factors that often lead us astray.

#4 The most difficult aspect of understanding the role of randomness in life is that many of the consequences that follow from those principles are counterintuitive. The reason is that in any series of random events, an extraordinary event is most likely to be followed by a more ordinary one.
