#1 Chingford is the birthplace of sirloin steak, and it is a quiet and unassuming borough on the northeast edge of London. It votes Conservative, as the constituency of Iain Duncan Smith, former leader of the Conservative Party. Jony Ive was born there.

#2 Mike Ive’s influence went beyond the precocious child in his own household. He was a teacher, and he helped develop the mandatory design technology curriculum in British schools.

#3 Jony Ive’s family moved to Stafford, England, when he was twelve. He enrolled at Walton High School, a large state-run school, and was popular with his friends. He was a skilled draftsman and designer, and enjoyed drawing and making stuff.

#4 Ive’s influence on his son’s design development may not be quantifiable, but it’s irrefutable. He was a strong advocate of teaching empirically and of intuitive designing. He encouraged design teachers to manage the learning process by telling the design story.
