#1 My mother, Janice Marylin Gardner, was born in 1960. She met her husband, Paul Eli Margulies, when she was twenty-one years old. He was fifteen years her senior and nervous about the age difference, but they were together for three years.

#2 My mother, who was born in Brazil, met my father when she was twenty-three, in the original production of My Fair Lady. He was extremely handsome, smart, and charming. She had never met anyone like him. They were in love, and she thought he was the father of her baby.

#3 My father and mother were married in 1960, and two and half years later, they moved to New York City. My mother felt isolated in Spring Valley, and my father became drained from the daily commute.

#4 I was a surprise pregnancy for my parents, who were already struggling with their marriage. Instead of fixing the problem, they drifted apart. I was a glimmer of hope that a new baby could solve the problematic marriage, but that was not the case.
