#1 Yuri Trush, a squad leader in an Inspection Tiger unit, was sent to investigate a tiger attack near Sobolonye, a small logging community in the deep forest. He and his squadmates were shocked by what they found.

#2 The tiger’s whiskers are believed to make them bulletproof, and its powdered bones will soothe their aches and pains. Its penis will make them virile, and there are many who will pay thousands of dollars for a tiger’s skin.

#3 In the 1990s, life in Russia was cheap, and corruption was widespread at every level of government. Trush made busts involving high-ranking police officers and members of parliament, and these were dangerous enemies for him to have.

#4 Trush’s team drove through the snowbound village of Yasenovie, and then east towards Sobolonye. They crossed a wide and improbably located gravel highway that had been conceived during Soviet times as an alternative to Primorye’s only north-south throughway.
