#1 I was adamantly opposed to the Vietnam War, but I was not a pacifist. I was willing to fight for my beliefs, and I did not want to be drafted. The NSA fast-tracked me, and I was eventually accepted.

#2 I had always been fascinated by the stories of frontier life, and I dreamed of living that type of life. I was blinded by the tales fed to me by schools, books, and movies.

#3 I was excited to be sent to Ecuador, where I would teach basic childcare, and help develop credit and savings cooperatives. I was shocked, however, at the market in Cuenca, which was dominated by Indigenous people dressed in ponchos and woolen skirts.

#4 The bus ride to the jungle was elitist, but I felt grateful for the front seat. I was extremely humbled by the generosity of the people we met on the bus, and the fact that we were privileged to be there at all.
