As a young girl, Harriet wanted to be a teacher, but her family could not afford it. Instead, she became a teacher’s assistant, and later opened an academy of her own. Because her husband had died young, she needed to support her growing family as well as pay for her own education. By age 21, she had published two books and had become a sought-after speaker.
