#1 John Wilkes Booth, 26 years old, was a member of a famous theatrical family. He was the son of the legendary actor and tragedian Junius Brutus Booth. His day began in the dining room of the National Hotel, where he was seen eating breakfast with Miss Carrie Bean.

#2 The Lincolns’ timing was perfect. Good Friday was a slow night, and the news that the president and General Grant would be attending the theater tonight was sure to boost ticket sales.

#3 When Lincoln arrived at Ford’s Theatre, he was met by the president’s messenger. Sometime between noon and 12:30 P. M. , Lincoln heard the news that would change his life. In just eight hours, the subject of all his brooding, hating, and plotting would stand on the very steps where he now sat.

#4 After the meeting, the president followed his usual routine: receiving a variety of friends, supplicants, and favor seekers; reading his mail; and catching up on correspondence and paperwork. He was eager to wind up business by 3:00 P. M. for an appointment he had with his wife, Mary.
