#1 The Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, was bound for his future in 1862. He had been at the heart of the Windsor drama, rushing across England to reach the death chamber in the small hours and keep vigil at the bedside, but he had received no flicker of recognition from the dying man.

#4 The Prince was very young when he went on the tour, but he was already familiar with the theory and practice of architecture because his father had built many buildings. He had explored a friendly, mysterious, and garish world of bricklayers and carpenters when he was twelve.
