#1 I was constantly on the lookout for the Black Pitfalls. What would make me appear blacker. I only ate chicken with a knife and fork, and never in front of white people. I didn’t want to be seen as a potential threat.

#2 I had to excel just to be seen as existing, and this was a lesson passed down from generation to generation. I was always chasing, always worrying about being exposed as the dumb black kid.

#3 I was the only person to get in trouble for this conversation, and it came from Tarsha. I was not mad at her, but I was aware that I had done the wrong thing. I was afraid to take the risk of being black by standing next to her.

#4 I was also very popular, and I used my popularity to get other people to do things for me. I would read the Tri-Valley Herald and the Valley Times, and I would read the Oakland Tribune in first period.
