#2 The general and I went into the house, where his wife, the Countess Bernstorff, was waiting for us. She had blue eyes and did her hair up in a crown on top of her head. She was friendly but with a certain reserve. The Americans arrived and took control of the house.

#3 The American forces took the villa and its contents. They were extremely thorough, even taking the dogs. I asked the American officer if he knew what the whole situation was about, but he just cursed and drove off.

#4 The American general and his heavily-armed escort brought me and Wolff to the Bolzano jail. We were separated, and I was taken to a dark and unpleasant cell. I had little water, and I was bitten by mosquitoes all night.
