Summary of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire

#1 The choice of where to live is often made based on the most beautiful place on earth. For me, that is Moab, Utah. I don’t mean the town itself, but the country which surrounds it.

#2 I woke up before sunrise and looked out the window at a scene dim and vague with flowing mists. Outside, the ground was covered with snow. It was cold as a tomb, a jail, or a cave. I lay down on the dusty floor and lit the pilot on the butane heater.

#3 I stood in the middle of the world, God’s navel, Abbey’s country, the red wasteland. The air was dry and clear, and the view was open and perfect in all directions except to the west where the ground rose up.

#4 The Arches are natural arches that were formed through the weathering of the sandstone walls in which they are found. They range in size from holes just big enough to walk through to openings large enough to contain the dome of the Capitol building in Washington, D. C.
