#1 I understand Norma Desmond, the silent-screen diva who drives a Rolls-Royce. I understand the life of an actress, and the limited shelf life of a acting career. I have gone through this process of auditioning for every role I have taken on.

#2 I had won a Tony for playing a chic model in Paris for Richard Rodgers on Broadway, and I had done several Hollywood films with Otto Preminger. I had appeared on beautifully produced television specials for years. I was one of the few performers who went from show to show.

#3 I wanted to play Norma Desmond, the actress who played the role of Rose in the show. The producers agreed to let me sing the main ballad from the show, As If We Never Said Goodbye. But I was afraid that not being able to sing the song properly would ruin my audition.

#4 I had a difficult time believing that the producer of the show would completely disregard the basic courtesy due a performer. I suspected that Sir Andrew was unhappy with me for being a singer who played Vegas more often than Broadway.
