#1 I remember being seven years old, checking out books with my mother, and having the librarian ask me if my name was really Austin. I realized that white people thought my name was strange.

#2 I had gotten used to white people assuming that I was male. They would always call me by my male name, and when I answered the librarian’s question about my little library card, she didn’t believe me.

#3 It can be comical how white people seem to be shocked and excited to hire a black person, only to be disappointed when they realize the black person will not fit in with their culture.

#4 It is exhausting being the only person of color in an organization, bearing the weight of all your white co-workers’ questions about Blackness. It is exhausting to constantly be hypervisible because of your skin, but for your needs to be completely invisible to those around you.
