Douglas Preston’s The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story is an account of the organization and findings of a 2015 expedition into the jungle of eastern Honduras. Preston accompanied the expedition and wrote about its discoveries. The expedition was inspired by legends of a lost civilization known as the White City. This city is probably mythical, but the expedition did uncover important archaeological remains of the pre-Columbian Mosquitia people.
The legend of the White City inspired numerous expeditions into the Honduran jungles in the early twentieth century. Some explorers claimed to have found it but provided no solid evidence. In 1996, Steve Elkins, a filmmaker, began to try to search for the city but was stymied by political turmoil following Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
