Stories of Old Greece and Rome: The Classical Myths Retold for Children

The Greek and Roman myths told for the schoolroom: Prometheus, Persephone, Orpheus, Baucis and Philemon, Cupid and Psyche, the labours of Hercules and the wanderings of Aeneas. Emilie Baker wrote it in 1913 with the quotations from English poetry that a teacher would want at hand. The retellings are plain and the classical references in later reading are exactly what they prepare for. Thirty-five plates by painters including Delacroix and Callcott show the gods and heroes themselves, from Prometheus shaping clay to Diana and Endymion, so the myths appear as artists across 1788 to 1922 imagined them.
