“I can explain all this, Maggie,” Paul said, scrambling to his feet. His pants were unzipped. “I suppose I should tell you that I’m not completely straight.” His face was flushed red, probably from embarrassment rather than sexual exertion.

“I already knew that you’re bi, Paul.”

“Oh. Right.”

“This just confirms it. Are you ready to move on?”

“How?” he asked, but he clearly wasn’t thinking. This wasn’t how he was expecting his evening to go. “I’m sorry,” he apologized.

I glanced one more time at the man in my husband’s life, and then sat down on one of the chairs next to the small, round table. “No need to apologize,” I said, trying to remain cool and aloof. “Obviously I can’t give you everything Nick can, but I’m just wondering what we do next.”

“I’d better leave,” Nick said as he headed toward the pile of clothes next to the bed. I stuck out my leg and blocked his path. I was wearing a skirt so they could see my stocking-covered leg halfway up my thigh.

“I have a few questions for you first, Nick.” I smiled at him. It was probably the same smile predators use when cornering prey. “Did you know that Paul was married?”
