Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus -- Early Works: Emblematic Line Phrases and Original Exercises from Transcribed Solos for All Instruments

Sonny Rollins's early recordings gave jazz some of its most memorable improvised lines: melodic, thematic and endlessly inventive. Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus -- Early Works gathers emblematic line phrases from his transcribed solos and turns them into practical vocabulary for any instrument.

Olegario Diaz organizes the material by chord quality, with sections on minor 7th, major 7th and dominant 7th lines, followed by a section that mixes them. Each phrase is labelled with the tune it comes from, including Airegin, Oleo, Tenor Madness, St. Thomas, Pent-Up House, Blue Seven, Strode Rode, The Eternal Triangle, Without a Song and Just in Time, and the phrases are paired with original exercises that develop them. Everything is written out in B-flat and is meant to be practised in all twelve keys.

Written for intermediate to advanced improvisers on any instrument who want to absorb Rollins's language at the source. Because JAZZ IS ALIVE.
