Arnol Heric believes he is being summoned for punishment. The Council’s machines have already begun to tamper with his mind, and he fears he will return home a compliant stranger. When fear drives him to defy them, events spiral into something larger than rebellion. What he discovers is not a conspiracy meant to control him, but a truth so unbearable it has been carefully concealed.

Nyark the first city hums with purpose. Fields are planted. Patrols move efficiently. The world appears to be recovering from catastrophe under the Council’s guidance. Yet Heric’s dreams refuse to leave him in peace. They press against his sleep with the promise of revelation, urging him toward something the Council is desperate to keep buried. Once he reaches the core of the city’s power, he confronts a choice no human has faced before. Knowledge will cost him more than obedience ever could.

Slave of Eternity moves from quiet domestic unease to cosmic dread with steady, controlled intensity. It asks what remains when authority collapses, when machines fall silent, and when a man finally understands the scale of his solitude. The final image does not comfort. It lingers.

Roger D. Aycock published short fiction in magazines including Amazing Stories and Fantastic during the 1940s and 1950s. His work often placed ordinary individuals inside unsettling revelations that reshaped their sense of reality. In Slave of Eternity, Aycock channels that talent into a stark meditation on control, illusion, and the cost of tearing away protective lies. The result is one of his most haunting tales—a story that narrows its focus to a single man and then expands it to the fate of a world.
