Fakta

The scale book the ukulele never had: every position, at the fret it actually starts on.

Most ukulele scale charts are one shape and “now move it”, which is how a player comes to know one box in C and nothing anywhere else. The shape moves; the neck it moves along was never in the book.

So every position in here is drawn at the fret it actually starts on, in all twelve keys, on a low-G ukulele. “Where do I play Eb dorian” is a page you turn to, not arithmetic you do.

What is in it

• Eleven scales — major, the six modes, harmonic minor, both pentatonics and the blues scale. • Twelve keys each, chromatically, so you look it up rather than transpose it. • Every position of every one: each note of the scale inside a window one hand can hold, anchored on each degree in turn, low to high. • One climb per chapter, in four-line tab: the whole scale as a single ascending line, each pitch placed exactly once and the strings taken in order. • The whole neck first, nut to twelfth fret, with note names and scale degrees on every dot.

Low G, on purpose. Reentrant tuning puts the fourth string above the third, and a scale that runs low to high across the strings stops meaning anything on it. With a low G the ukulele is a small guitar in fourths with one third in the middle, and every shape runs the way a hand expects.

Fifteen frets, honestly. A concert ukulele runs out of neck before a seven-note scale runs out of positions, so in many keys the seventh position — the first one an octave up — does not fit. Where that happens the chapter says so, in one line. Nothing is hidden and nothing is padded.

132 chapters. Eleven scales, twelve keys, low-G tuning (G C E A).

For ukulele players who have one shape and want the rest of the neck, and for guitarists who picked one up and want their scales back.
