Rapport Under Caution DBT-Informed Communication for Lawful, Noncoercive Investigative Interviews

A difficult investigative interview can go wrong long before anyone raises a voice.

It happens when a detective begins listening for confirmation instead of information. When a contradiction becomes a contest. When “rapport” turns into a tactic the interviewee can feel from across the table. When pressure produces a statement, but the process leaves everyone wondering how reliable that statement really is.

Rapport Under Caution is a practical field guide to a different approach: investigative interviewing built around accuracy, lawful process, emotional control, careful questioning, and verifiable information.

Drawing on research about noncoercive interrogation, current information-gathering practice, and selected DBT interpersonal effectiveness concepts, the book shows investigators how to communicate firmly without turning the interview room into a pressure chamber.

This is not a therapy manual. It does not ask detectives to become clinicians. It does not dress manipulation in softer language.

Instead, it adapts useful DBT-informed communication ideas for professional interviewing: mindful attention, emotion regulation, validation, clear requests, relationship-preserving communication, and integrity under pressure. Those skills are placed inside the guardrails that matter in real investigations: rights, voluntariness, recording, vulnerability, corroboration, accurate evidence disclosure, and agency policy. What the reader will learn

Readers will see how rapport-based interviewing works when rapport means a credible working relationship rather than forced friendliness. The book explains how to open an interview clearly, develop a free account, separate observation from interpretation, and challenge contradictions without overstating the evidence.

It also shows how the interviewer’s own reactions can affect the record. Anger, impatience, disgust, certainty, and competitive energy can all change question design. The book offers simple methods for noticing those reactions before they start running the interview.

The section on police interview techniques breaks down practical question design: open prompts, specific questions, leading questions, multiple questions, false choices, pause tolerance, and evidence sequencing. A worked hypothetical interview demonstrates how to move from planning through account development, challenge, closure, and evaluation without treating a confession as the only measure of success.

The book also addresses one of the highest-stakes problems in the field: false confession prevention. It explains why investigators should protect the source of important details, avoid feeding facts unnecessarily, distinguish disclosure from corroboration, and pay close attention to youth and other forms of vulnerability.

For supervisors and trainers, the final chapters turn law enforcement communication into observable behaviors that can be coached. “Good rapport” becomes specific: clear explanations, open prompts, accurate summaries, appropriate validation, careful evidence wording, and proportionate challenges. “Too aggressive” becomes specific too: interruption, exaggerated certainty, repeated accusation, ambiguous promises, or pressure tied to silence. A field guide built for the actual room

The book is written for detectives, investigators, interview trainers, supervisors, and professionals who conduct or review investigative interviews. It is concise enough to use in training and detailed enough to support debriefs.
