The book is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is titled "Cheng Zhaocai - Shakespeare of Rural China", tracing the rural origins of Pingju and its early development in cities, as well as the biography and works of the father of Pingju, Cheng Zhaocai; The second chapter is titled "The Rise of Leading Actress", which introduces the famous roles and their stories in Peking Opera; The third chapter is titled "Theater Life Before and After 1949", which introduces the historical background of the development of Peking Opera; Chapter 4 describes and analyzes the music and composers of Pingju; Chapter 5 consists of translations of three important Pingju works.
