Paradise Lost is an epic poem that recounts the biblical story of the Fall of Man. The narrative begins after Satan and the rebel angels have been defeated and cast out of Heaven. Determined to oppose God, Satan travels to the newly created Earth, where he seeks to corrupt humanity. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve live in a state of innocence and harmony. Warned of the dangers posed by Satan, they nevertheless become vulnerable to temptation. Disguised as a serpent, Satan persuades Eve to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Eve then shares the fruit with Adam, and together they bring sin, suffering, and mortality into the world. Alongside this central story, Milton explores the rebellion in Heaven, the creation of the universe, and the consequences of disobedience. The poem examines profound themes such as free will, justice, redemption, and humanity's relationship with God. Written in majestic blank verse, Paradise Lost is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of English literature. Its influence extends far beyond poetry, shaping religious thought, philosophy, and countless later works of literature.
