Outlaws of the Marsh, new edition Vol. 8: Murder Most Foul

One of the reasons that Outlaws of the Marsh may feel familiar to a contemporary Western audience is because, in broad terms, it bears a striking resemblance to the famous Western legend of Robin Hood and his band of outlaws, and the American tales of Jesse James and his band of thieves. But the tales of Robin Hood follow a remarkably stable pattern, one in which Robin Hood and his followers confront the forces of corruption and oppression wiith rebellion predicated on a very Christian notion of charity. This charity dictates that the poor are the most worthy people, and Robin Hood fights against the rich on behalf of the poor with very clear moral and ethical boundaries: Robin Hood's struggle is defined by fixed notions of good and evil, right and wrong. He is a hero because he honors the distinction. Jesse James, by contrast, is a classic example of an antihero because he deliverately flaunts the institional notions of right and wrong. His code is purely self-defined. There is something in his rebellion that appeals to readers, but he is first and foremost a villain.

By contrast, Outlaws of the Marsh challenges the Western definition of the hero by presenting a series of characters that are capable of defending the meek, but just as likely to exact violent retribution against those who insult them even slightly. In the most extreme examples, the story of Outlaws presents characters that, by modern definitions, would be considered cold-blooded killers (like Jesse James), yet are regarded in the story as heroes of Robin Hood's caliber. There is no better, and no more challenging, example of how this story dilutes the line between hero and villain than the character of Wu Song.
