Outlaws of the Marsh, new edition Vol. 14: The Blade's Edge

The battle between the LiangShan bandits and the Zhu family alliance marks a decisive shift in Outlaws of the Marsh, one in which we watch the formerly rag-tag team of bandits organize into something approaching a fighting and governing force and declare war on a rival for regional supremacy. As such, Outlaws of the Marsh becomes something of a study in war, and much like another legendary Chinese story, Three Kingdoms, Outlaws has a very complex view of armed conflict, the means by which it is waged and the ends it supposedly serves.

We are given contrasting examples of the philosophy of war in Luan TingYu and Sun Li, longtime friends and former students of combat. Sun Li stuck to the institutional path and became a military official with the royal forces, while Luan TingYu became something of a nomadic warrior, wandering the land free of allegiance and lending his services to any who wished to learn what he considers to be the noble art of war. In what seems to be a fortunate stroke of luck, the two men are reunited during the battle between LiangShan and the Zhu family. Luan TingYu is especially excited to spend time with his old friend and ruminate on the nature of combat and the enevitable result of one side winning while the other side perishes. Sun Li views such a scenario with sadness, but Luan TingYu sees it as the ultimate expression of life: to fight directly and nobly against a worthy adversary, with no trickery or deception, is to test yourself in the most primal way, and potentially claim your place atop the natural order
