Outlaws of the Marsh, new edition Vol. 10: Brotherhood in Danger

For as much misfortune as he endures, Song Jiang leads a fairly charmed life. Through much of Outlaws of the Marsh, Song Jiang is being pursued or captured by those who want him dead. What saves him from death on countless occasions is his reputation: time and again, he is almost done in by someone who hears his name and asks if he is the Timely Rain. When these bandits and outlaws learn they are in the company of a legendary benefactor of bandits and outlaws, they immediately drop to their knees and swear allegiance to this "great man." In fact, it seems to be one of the running jokes of Outlaws that Song Jiang cares so much about keeping others out of trouble, yet he can't even seem to keep himself out of trouble. But for as much as Song Jiang is revered for his willingness to help others, his help comes with consequences. And as both Hua Rong and Qin Ming come to learn, trusting Song Jiang can be a double-edged sword.

Hua Rong's situation in QingZhou is desperate to begin with, but Song Jiang, even though he had the best of intentions, only made matters worse for his friend when he saved Liu Gao's wife from the clutches of a treacherous local bandit. Liu Gao, Hua Rong's fellow official and persistent adversary, is a treacherous man with an equally treacherous wife, so when she claims that Song Jiang wronged her, rather than saved her, Liu Gao seizes the opportunity to capture both Song Jiang and his friend Hua Rong. What's ironic is that Song Jiang only intervened on behalf of Liu Gao's wife because he thought he would be helping Hua Rong in the long run, and neither man could have guessed what a wrongheaded decison that was.
