Vol. 2: In the days of Song Dynasty, government corruption is rampant, and the enemies of a ruthless schemer named Gao Qiu are driven out of power and into the unnamed countryside of China. There they encounter 108 mischievous spirits who have taken root in the form of bandits and thieves who are about to make life very difficult for Gao Qiu.

Honor is a complicated thing in a land as turbulent as China during the Song Dynasty. At a time when it is impossible to trust the motives of those who are responsible for upholding law and order, a civic code of honor between citizens that is implemented and adequatedly enforced by government is nonexixtent. That leaves individuals to live by an honor code of their own making, and for the bandits who run from or ignore the law, it means living a contradiction: Trust only among your kind, and never trust an outlaw.

Vol. 3: Lin Chong is the tragic hero in the early chapters of Outlaws of the Marsh, an honorable man who served his emperor with distinction and loved his wife with all his heart. Fidelity to nation and family are two cherished principles in any culture at any time, and Lin Chong believes that adhering to those principles amkes him a good man. But when corruption and villainy conspire to frame Lin Chong for a crime and sentence him to exile, he learns that when principle, purpose, and social order have been stripped away, he is nothing like the man he thought he was.

From the beginning, there were suggestions of a violent nature lurking beneath Lin Chong's calm demeanor: when Gao YaNei first made unwanted advances on his wife, Lin Chong struggled to suppress the impulse to kill him, since such an act against the son of a royal official would result in a death sentence. But even once he'd overcome the impulse, he tormented himself with thoughts of how helpless he was in the face of social norms and the law itself. When Gao YaNei conspired with Lu Qian to have him exiled, Lin Chong learned that the law did not deliver justice. But Lin Chong will realize that his idea of justice can be as vicious as anything done to him by Gao YaNei.

Vol. 4: The plight of Yang Zhi following his expulsion form civil service, when considered alongsie the story of Chao Gai hatching a plan to rob a fortune from Secretary Liang ZhongShu, provides an insightful glimpse into the contrasting realities of life during the Song Dynasty. For those who live close to the central cities, and therefore live under the influence of civil and governing institutions, there is a sense that common purpose can be a civic ideal that overcomes a winner-take-all mentality. But in the fairly lawless hinterlands of rural China, where the influence of these institutions is barely acknowledged, much less felt, there is no such common purpose, and life is an endless parade of one person building him- or herself up by knocking someone else down.

Vol. 5: Outlaws of the Marsh is a story in which the central governing authority is riddled with corruption and trusted by very few. As a result, the story examines several characters who act as self-appointed authority figures to those around them. With regard to the specific figures of Chao Gai and Lu ZhiShen, the story draws contrasting portraits about the utility of violence in establishing authority. Where one man is quick to use intimidation and violence as a way of winning allies and subordinates, Chao Gai is a more benevolent operator, a man who prefers to extend as open hand rather than a fist - at least until he is backed into a corner, at which point he acts swiftly and violently.
