Of Sparks and Hearts: A Grumpy Sunshine Firefighter Romance

Captain Mara Alvarez keeps Station 999 running like a tight engine. Orders clear. Standards high. Personal feelings stay locked away where no one can reach them.

After years of loss and command, Mara doesn’t allow distractions. Especially not the kind that arrives smiling.

Then rookie Dani Brooks walks through the bay doors.

Dani is bright, fearless, and determined to prove she belongs. She throws herself into every call quick decisions, steady hands, no hesitation. Her easy jokes echo through the locker room. Her warmth pushes against the walls Mara has spent ten years building.

It unsettles Mara more than any fire.

Working side by side leaves little room for distance. Warehouse infernos. Shaking stairwells inside collapsing buildings. Rescue lines thrown in seconds while smoke fills the air. On every call, Mara and Dani must trust each other without question.

Respect comes first. Quiet and reluctant. Then something harder to ignore.

A glance that lingers too long. A brush of hands during training drills. Silence between them after the alarms stop.

But rules exist for a reason. A captain doesn’t cross that line with a rookie. Doing so could cost Mara everything her rank, the crew’s confidence, the balance she fought to maintain.

Outside, flames rise against the night sky. Inside Station 999, another kind of tension builds.

How long can Mara pretend she doesn’t feel the heat?

Discover more passion, danger, and unforgettable love in the Station 999 Hearts series.

Sirens cut through the night at Station 999. Boots hit concrete. Engines roar out of the bay while red lights flash across the walls. In one of the city’s busiest firehouses, courage is routine. Love isn’t supposed to be.

Each call brings heat, smoke, and split-second choices. Inside the station, the women who answer those alarms carry their own tension. Rivalries flare beside the lockers. Old feelings return when least expected. Sometimes an ordinary rescue leaves something new burning under the surface.

One firefighter clashes constantly with the woman who pushes her the hardest. Another discovers that a moment meant to save a life can change her own. Elsewhere, quiet glances grow into something neither of them planned.

Between training drills, late-night shifts, and the smell of smoke clinging to jackets, lines start to blur. Professional becomes personal. Distance becomes impossible.

At Station 999, flames aren’t the only thing that spreads quickly.

Because sometimes the hardest step isn’t charging into danger.

It’s admitting who you want waiting when the sirens stop.
