Mystery of The Yellow Room

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. In the heart of the French countryside, inside a laboratory locked as tightly as a vault, a woman is found beaten nearly to death — and her attacker has vanished into thin air. Mathilde Stangerson, daughter of a renowned scientist, is discovered alone in the Yellow Room: every door bolted, every window barred, the only way in sealed from within. There is no possible way anyone could have escaped. And yet, someone did.

Enter Joseph Rouletabille, an eighteen-year-old newspaper reporter with a genius for deduction and an ego to match. Convinced the police are chasing shadows, he talks his way into the investigation, determined to out-think everyone — including Frédéric Larsan, the most celebrated detective in France. As the two rivals circle the case from opposite angles, the mystery only deepens: a second attack, footprints that appear and vanish, and a culprit who seems able to walk through solid walls.

First published in 1907, The Mystery of the Yellow Room is widely regarded as one of the earliest and finest examples of the "locked-room mystery" — a puzzle so meticulously built that Gaston Leroux included diagrams of the crime scene so readers could try to solve it for themselves. Leroux, who would later write the immortal Phantom of the Opera, brings the same gift for atmosphere and misdirection here, layering red herrings and reversals until the truth lands as a genuine shock.

Decades before Agatha Christie or John Dickson Carr perfected the form, Leroux laid its foundation, and critics still rank this novel among the greatest mysteries ever written. If you love a fair-play puzzle where every clue sits in plain sight yet the solution stays impossible to see coming, this is where the genre truly begins.
