As a light-skinned, small, Black girl in 1960s Oklahoma living in a predominately Black community, Kathy Rushing faced incredible torment from her classmates. Even in the safety of her own home came relentless teasing, bullying, and losing a sense of self amongst her siblings.

Through her journey, Kathy gained something profound, something everyone else tried to squash. An identity. Through the pain and torment, she gained an understanding of her strength—and a closer connection to God. She found self-acceptance and learned the true value of her worth: immeasurable.

About the Author

Kathy Rushing is a semi-retired nurse and passionate volunteer for her church and community at large. She enjoys traveling, visiting family, arts and crafts, and sewing.
