I found the box behind the furnace in my own basement. He hadn't even locked it.

Eleven years I was married to the president of the Blackdamp MC. Eleven years I did the coffee at every run, sat with every widow, and signed every paper he slid across the counter without reading a word of it.

Then I drove out to the shop on a Thursday night to ask him about a bank account.

I did not scream. I did not cry. I backed out of that doorway and I closed the door quietly behind me so they wouldn't hear me leave — and that is the part I still cannot get out from under.

Because the man on that couch had been mine on paper since June of 2015. And the club knew. Every last one of them knew, and there is a book with a brass number on the door where they wrote down what they decided about me, by name, four weeks before my wedding.

They took a vote.

Casimir Vashko knew before any of them. He was the boy I was going to marry at nineteen, and he stood at the back of my church in a suit, and eleven days later they gave him a patch. He has been fixing things in my house ever since. The sink. The gutters. The porch light. Eleven years of a man being kind to me, and every bit of it was a job somebody gave him.

I am a bookkeeper. It is the one thing I have. So I did what I know how to do — I opened the ledger, and I started counting.

Four hundred and eleven thousand dollars.

Out of a club that told a seventy-one-year-old widow there was a waiting period on her husband's funeral.

Out of a fund that turned down sixteen hundred dollars for a kid's braces in June.

And every dollar of it went out of an account with my name on it.

There is a house four hundred miles from here that I have never seen. There is a man they have all been paying for eleven years who does not exist. And there is exactly one thing in this world I can still do about any of it.

I can walk into that room with the door shut, and I can make nineteen men say it out loud.

They should have voted differently.
