Jerome K. Jerome serves up a wonderfully ironical battle-of-the-sexes narrative that turns traditional domestic tropes completely on their head. The story introduces us to the newly married Mrs. Christopher Korner, a young woman who should be perfectly happy but is instead deeply frustrated by her husband's behavior. The problem? Mr. Korner is simply too nice. He is mild-mannered, unfailingly polite, and refuses to argue, a disposition that leaves his formidable wife feeling thoroughly embarrassed and wishing for a husband with a bit more "traditionally masculine" grit and fire.

Venting her annoyance to her friend, Miss Greene, Mrs. Korner laments that she wants a man who will assert his authority. But the universe has a funny way of granting domestic wishes in the most chaotic way possible.

Following an unexpected afternoon meeting with a cousin, the usually sober Mr. Korner accidentally gets completely drunk. Returning home in a loud, disheveled, and utterly unhinged state, he decides it is finally time to act like the master of the house.

Mrs. Korner Sins Her Mercies is Jerome K. Jerome at his sharpest, blending spirited dialogue with a genuinely clever critique of societal gender expectations.
