Mülkiyet karşıtı yaşlı anarşist, hayatının son yıllarında ironik bir durumda kaldı. İsviçre vatandaşlığına girmenin yollarını arayan Bakunin'e sunulan seçenek, orada bir ev sahibi olmasıydı ve belki de en hazini, sahip olacağı bu ev nedeniyle, polisin, resmî tutanaklara "Michael Bakunin, rantiye" notunu düşmesiydi. 18 Mayıs 1814'te Rusya'da doğan Michael Aleksandrovich Bakunin, 1 Temmuz 1876'da öldüğünde ülkesinden çok uzaklardaydı ve cenazesinde yalnızca 30–40 kişi vardı. Genç Bakunin için, "Aşk, insanın yeryüzündeki en üst misyonuydu. Bir insanın kendini aşksız vermesi, Kutsal Ruh'a karşı işlenmiş bir günahtı"..
Kadınlar tarafından oldukça çekici bulunan Mihail'in ise kadınlarla ilişkisi hep ruhsal bir aşk olarak kaldı. İsviçre'nin muhteşem manzarası eşliğinde George Sand romanları okuyan Bakunin, Fransız düşüncesinin Alman düşüncesinden üstün olduğu inancını sağlamlaştırıyordu.
