Miss Ludington's Sister: A Romance of Identity

Miss Ludington believes that the girl she was at seventeen is a separate person, dead these forty years — so she builds a copy of the village she grew up in and hangs the girl's portrait in it. Then a medium produces her. Bellamy's Looking Backward sold hundreds of thousands and spawned more than 160 Nationalist Clubs; this earlier novel is his strangest, and the fraud is not the interesting part. Fifty-eight plates by painters including Edvard Munch and Eastman Johnson, spanning 1840 to 1922, gather portraits and family scenes that echo the novel's obsession with the self remade and the self remembered.
