Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life

A provincial town in the years before the Reform Bill, and two marriages made for the wrong reasons: a clever woman who wants to serve a great mind, and a young doctor who wants to change medicine. Eliot published it in eight parts over a year, and readers followed it the way later audiences followed serials. Virginia Woolf called it one of the few English novels written for grown-up people. Fifty-six plates by painters including Munch and Constable, from gardens and portraits to the light of Kragerø, echo the provincial lives and private rooms of Eliot's study.
