Complete and unabridged, with 56 full-page plates by Edvard Munch, Raja Deen Dayal and Marianne North. Bengal in short compass: an aunt who has given her whole life to a household that does not notice, a postmaster posted to a village he cannot bear, a wife who reads her husband correctly and says nothing. Tagore won the Nobel in 1913, the first non-European to do so, and founded a school where lessons were held under the trees; these stories are where his prose is coldest and best. Fifty-six plates of houses, women at doorways and winter light, among them Munch and Abanindranath Tagore, run from 1820 to 1927 alongside these tales of household and village.
