The novel focuses on the life of Martin Chuzzlewit, an arrogant young man who is disinherited by his wealthy grandfather due to his disrespectful behaviour and materialistic nature. In pursuit of money, Martin journeys to America, where he wishes to begin anew. After reckoning with illness, and the ruthlessness of American society, Martin begins to understand the errors of his ways, with a desire to be a changed man.
