In "Mark," a short story by Saki (Hector Hugh Munro), the protagonist, Augustus Mellowkent, is a struggling novelist who adopts the pen name Mark Mellowkent at the suggestion of his publisher. This change is intended to create a more appealing persona, as the name "Mark" evokes strength and allure, in contrast to the more languid connotations of "Augustus."As Augustus works on his latest novel, he grapples with feelings of inadequacy and envy toward a salesman who is confidently promoting his wares. This encounter sparks a moment of introspection for Augustus, leading him to question why he cannot embody the strong persona of Mark Mellowkent in real life.
