Fantasy & SciFi
· This is a debut novel by Gabe Calderón (they/them), a Two-Spirit/queer/non-binary author who is mixed-race (Indigenous [Mi’kmaq] and white): a speculative Indigiqueer novel in which Two-Spirit, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, neurodivergent, and disabled characters, survivors of a devastating war, defend themselves and their community from the Madjideye, a nameless, faceless spiritual entity that is determined to subjugate the human population. · Gabe’s work first came to our attention for their story written for Love after the End, the anthology of Indigiqueer speculative fiction edited by Joshua Whitehead that won the 2021 Lambda Literary Award for anthologies. Their work is deeply imagined and subverts traditional speculative fiction tropes through a queer and Indigenous lens. · In Gabe’s own words: “I actually dreamed this story over ten years ago. I asked some elders about it, and they told me this idea of a ruined world could actually happen one day if we continued on the path we were on with regard to climate change. I started thinking about how exhausted Mother Earth must be with us two-leggeds. So I wrote this book in which all the spirits that we rely on every day―like fire and the earth and water―leave humans behind. I also really wanted to write a book where two-spirit, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, neurodivergent and disabled characters were at the forefront of saving the world, when so often we’re only an afterthought.” · The title “Màgòdiz” (mah-GO-dizz) is an Anishinabemowin (Algonquin dialect) term meaning a person who refuses allegiance to, resists, or rises in arms against the government or ruler of their country.
