"Los negociantes de la Puerta del Sol", de Carmen de Burgos, es una historia de amor y una novela picaresca. Una historia de amor a la icónica plaza, que la autora describe en los tipos populares que la habitan y en su historia, y una novela picaresca de los pillos que esperaban a principios del Siglo XX sus oportunidades en los cafés y las calles colindantes a la Puerta del Sol.

Contada desde el punto de vista de una víctima que, atrapada por el hechizo del lugar, ve en él el teatro de sus éxitos y fortunas, nos acerca a un Madrid popular e inhóspito que retrata con realismo naturalista y empatía.

It is a love letter to Madrid’s iconic square (Puerta del Sol) —evoked through the everyday characters who inhabit it and the history that shaped it—and a picaresque tale of the rogues who, in the early twentieth century, waited for their chance in the cafés and side streets around Puerta del Sol.

Told from the viewpoint of a victim who, captivated by the place’s spell, comes to see it as the stage for their triumphs and windfalls, the novel draws us into a bustling yet unforgiving Madrid, portrayed with naturalistic realism and deep empathy.
