Legends of Gods and Ghosts: Collected and Translated from the Hawaiian

Hawaiian legends of gods and ghosts: the shark-god of Molokai and the shark-man of Waipio valley, the poison-god Kalai-pahoa, Milu the king of ghosts, and the bride brought back from the under-world. Westervelt lived in Honolulu, took the stories from Hawaiian speakers and printed the names as they were given. He is one of the few collectors of Polynesian material who did not tidy the theology. Forty-six plates carry the Pacific itself, from Gauguin's Tahitian figures to Tavernier's Kilauea crater, so the islands the stories come from are never far from the page.
