Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi lock eyes across a fortress, each promising to outlast the other. Wei's generalsdemand battle; Yirefuses. Shu's supplies bleed; Zhuge Liang knows endurance is not his ally. He lures, feints, and invents--wooden-oxen and flowing-horses to feed the line, illusion to bait the cautious foe.

Wei musters a vast host toward Hanzhong; the weather itself deserts them, and Shu snatches the edge. Victory lies within reach when a summons from Chengdu--pettiness in royal ink--spoils a chance at victory. The moment curdles.

Years grind by. The two great minds trade salvos; soldiers die in the stalemates that move no boundary or banner. Zhuge Liang springs a final design, tricking Sima Yi and chasing his forces into Shangfang Valley--where an ambush waits to end the war once and for all. But fate ends it first. Illness takes the Zhuge Liang as the trap closes. The signal does not come, Sima Yi survives, and the war he would not fight becomes the victory he can claim.

For several decades, China has been torn apart by civil war, as feudal lords and power-hungry tyrants vied control of the Han Dynasty. What began as a conflic between eighteen lords and became a battle between three kingdoms now rests in the hands of a new generation, who must finish their ancestors' work if China is to be unified nation once more.

In 263 AD, the King of Shu Liu Shan surrendered to Wei. In the next year, Sima Yi's grandson Sima Yan dethroned the Emperor Cao Huang to ascend to the imperial throne to found West Jin. In twenty years, Sun Quan's grandson Sun Hao, the King of Wu, surrendered to West Jin, and division that raged throughout the continent for such a long time finally ended.
