Vol. 6: Liu Bei has chosen to challenge Cao Cao for the role of the most powerful man in China. But on the eve of battle, Liu Bei's ally, Yuan Shao, fails to support him, and Liu Bei must run for his life. This leaves Guan Yu alone to fend for himself against Cao Cao, who is keen to have a man of his courage and honor on his side. Can Cao Cao convince Guan Yu to change allegiance? Guan Yu's pledge isn't that different from pledges taken by others in the story; like Guan Yu, Cao Cao has pledged to restore China and bring peace to its people. But upholding the oath will not be easy. Cao Cao still controls much of the nation, and a new power is emerging in the east. Battle lines will be drawn, and more than one brotherhood will be tested. It is clear that Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei are extremely lucky to have found and pledged their lives to one another when they did. Because the oath they swore cannot be broken by anything but death, the three men are bound to each other no matter how profoundly they disagree.

The legend of the three kingdoms is an epic chronicle of a centuries-long struggle to win control of China after the fall of the Han Dynasty. It is therefore a story of ambition and betrayal, cunning and cruelty, greed and virtue, war and peace. It is also a story about the shifting fortunes of one's supposed fate and destiny.

Vol. 9: Fortune has finally smiled on Liu Bei and his brothers, but it will take more than luck for them to fulfill the oath they swore. Now, with the help of a mysterious but brilliant ally, the brothers prepare themselves for a future in which new battle lines will be drawn, and the era of the three kingdoms will begin. The contrast between pride and humility is best exemplified by the characters of Liu Bei and Sun Quan, and how each man approaches the possibility of seeking out Zhuge Liang. Liu Bei knows that there are those in the world who are better than him at certain things, and that he stands to benefit from surrounding himself with those people. It is this virtue that convinces Zhuge Liang that Liu Bei is more than just another ambitious man who wants his help to conquer the land.

Vol. 10 : Liu Bei was homelss and nearly powerless when he took a risk and asked Zhuge Liang to be his senior military strategist. But the gamble has more than paid off. Zhuge Liang has already changed the balance of power between the three kingdoms, and he will soon prove that some battle can be won without weapons. What changes Liu Bei's fortune is the arrival of Zhuge Liang. At first, Zhuge Liang urges Liu Bei to abandon his ideals for the sake of winning the war and eventually restoring the peace. When Liu Bei refuses, Zhuge Liang doesn't withdraw his offer of support; rather, he comes to understand that fighting on behalf of Liu Bei will require weapons that don't involve sharpened steel.
