Legends and Romances of Brittany: The Saints and Fairies of Armorica

The Breton material - the drowned city of Ys, the ankou who drives the death-cart, the saints who arrived in stone troughs - collected from the ballads and the parish traditions. Brittany kept its stories longer than most of France, and Spence gathered them from the Breton collectors while the language was still spoken in the villages. Fifty-five plates from 1813 to 1914, among them Théophile Deyrolle and Charles Cottet, follow the Breton coast and its pardons, menhirs and market days.
