'I really wanted nothing more than to truthfully write down everything that drove so manu of us to ask ourselves: "Are we still alive?" And I want nothing more than for the people who read this book to be filled with the same sadness as me about where the limits of human's and life's meaninglessness lie: I want them to wish and strive so that no human life should ever again assume a bestial form.'
The autobiographical novel Just four months was written a year after the end of WWII and is now published for the first time in an English translation. Pavel Fischl recounts his ordeal at one of the Auschwitz labour camps as well as his experiences during the death march from the camp as Russian forces drew closer.
Fischl portrays the friendships and the strength that came to unite a small group of prisoners. Thus, together, they were able to keep hope alive and survive.
