She first gained attention as the lead vocalist of Big Brother and the Holding Company, with hits like "Piece of My Heart." Her solo career, highlighted by the critically acclaimed album Pearl, cemented her status as a rock icon. Despite her success, Joplin battled addiction and died of a heroin overdose on October 4, 1970, at the age of 27. Her passionate performances and distinctive voice continue to inspire generations.
