IS THE ENVIRONMENT A COMMON GOOD?: The issues of Water Scarcity in today's Market Economy (A Brazilian Account)

The debate over the distribution of fresh water is troubled with controversy, intertwining the concept of water as a human right—a common good—with the prevailing forces of capitalism, which often prioritise profit over environmental protection. This dynamic disproportionately affects marginalised populations, including the poor and underprivileged, who typically face greater barriers to accessing water than wealthier consumers, who often pay less for the same resource, this approach raises serious ethical concerns.

In this article, I explore various themes, including water rights, migration, and the impact of resource scarcity. The displacement of communities due to water-related challenges is a pressing concern. My deepest concern lies with Brazil, the most water-rich country in the world, facing significant challenges in safeguarding its water sources.

This book is not aimed at an academic audience but seeks to engage a broader readership by offering insights into water usage, hydrology, and the concept of water as a fundamental human right. While the academic discourse on these topics is rich and well-supported, filled with evidence and ongoing discussions, my intention is to share my passion for this vital subject, which also holds deep spiritual significance for me.

I invite you to explore the insights I have gathered over the years, hoping they resonate with your own understanding of the critical importance of water in our lives.
